Sonic the Hedgehog 4 Episode I: the return of the blue hedgehog [review]

sonic

Sonic the Hedgehog is one of the most popular characters in the world of video games. His celebrity is in the stubborn character and his extraordinary speed, features specially designed by SEGA to compete against the legendary plumber Nintendo, Super Mario.

The announcement of Episode 4 of the saga of Sonic, SEGA mascots fans loudly rejoiced because the game is a sort of back-to-basics. The developers promised a platform with a healthy dose of speed, Adrenaline and, above all, fun. Moreover, the addition of the porting on mobile devices could only be welcomed with open arms by the users.

Let us see if this next installment of Sonic (or at least the first episode) deserves the number 4 next to the title.

A tutta birra!

The evil Dr. Eggman is back again in action: his plan is to create a powerful weapon to neutralize Sonic once and for all. Our goal (once again) will be to retrieve the Chaos Emeralds to bring balance to the world.

The landscapes are very colorful and enjoyable to watch.

Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episode I nostalgia makes his strength, because the game invokes the classic Sonic games Sega's Megadrive (or Genesis in the United States). The title is a side scroller 2D where, as the blue hedgehog, we will have to cross the levels crammed with obstacles and monsters until you get to the usual end-of-level boss. In addition to legendary Spin Dash (slower than previous chapters), Sonic can use the Homing Attack again to eliminate enemies, a sort of shot in mid-air. The graphic sector is well cared for, the settings (3D prerenderizzate) are colorful and General modeling is very good. The fluidity is discreet and has no problems over frame rate. Unfortunately we are already at the end of the positive points in this fourth installment of Sonic, we find out just why.

Some Casino levels leave something to be desired.

A Sonic short "Sonic"

Although the title calls the previous chapters of the saga, Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episode I do not possess the hallmarks that have characterized the fast gameplay and rushes of the blue hedgehog. To be more specific, let's analyze the physics.  The latter is totally changed, changing of several enjoyment of the title: the jumps are too unclear, imprecise and rides and special ramps do not give that sense of speed. The level design flaw of originality, in fact most of the levels presents questionable gameplay choices and not based on the mechanics of speed, but on a "platform" approach but, above all, much slower. The most serious flaw of this chapter 4 of Sonic, though, lies in the lousy control system. Virtual analog stick is small and does not react well to the touch. This flaw, combined with the complexity of physics, makes game sessions rather tedious.

The complexity of the control system will limit of a lot of fun.

During the 24 available levels (including 5 bosses and 7 special stages), there will be some (very few) moments, especially in the early levels where the reference to the previous chapters is particularly evident. Unfortunately the music do not reach anywhere near the fantastic melodies of early episodes of the series, coming in the middle of the portable titles.

Conclusion

Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episode I is a bare-bones. Most problems stem from the control system on the mobile device, inaccurate and cumbersome, but unfortunately the level design fails to surprise, except in rare cases.  The gameplay might seem very similar to old chapters in the saga, but the distortion of physics has changed the approach to the game, making it a little exciting and a lot slower. The purchase is addressed exclusively to the most avid fan of Sonic, but probably they will be disappointed.

Adrenaline: there is no trace ofa dynamism of the older chapters, except in a few levels.
5/10
Playability: lousy control system and complex.
3/10
Graphics: colorful and well made, SEGA style.
8/10
Sound: Music and sound enough, not up to the previous chapters.
6/10
Longevity: 24 there are many levels, but the replay value is low because of the slow pace of play and bad controls.
6/10
Price: € 3.68 is a good price considering that on consoles cost much more, but the port was not handled very well, especially for the control system.
7/10

Overall rating : 4.5/10
